Employee Engagement

“Employee engagement” is something that is bandied around a lot these days, but what does it really mean and how do you do it effectively ?

Our experience has shown that regularly conversing with employees throughout a change project can make a significant difference to the outcomes. We encourage our clients to involve a cross spectrum of employees in reward activities, whether it is helping to design a new pay structure or job evaluation framework, or gathering feedback via focus groups or responding to on line questionnaires as part of bonus or benefit reviews.

Changes to reward made in isolation and communicated as a done deal rarely receive acceptance, particularly where there are difficult messages to impart. And now in turbulent economic times, cost cutting and erosion of the reward package, especially around pensions, is leaving employees with a bad taste in their mouths that won't go away. Often seen as a "nice to have", engagement and communications activities are frequently left to the implementation stage which is too late to be really effective and won't engender loyalty in the long term.

So how do you ensure that your employees are engaged ? Our recommended approach in any reward change involves creating a visible engagement strategy, exploring who the audiences are, what key messages need to be conveyed and how/when is best to involve and communicate. It can be as simple or complex as you want it to be, but the critical point is that you are thinking about the end result upfront.
